The Pure Self — The Eternal Reality of Brahman

According to Vedanta, our true nature is not the body, mind, or intellect, but the Pure Self (Ātman)—all-pervading, complete, immutable, liberated, unattached, and the eternal witness of all experiences. This can be understood through the example of the ocean and its waves. Waves have different shapes and names and continuously rise and fall, but their essential nature is always water. Similarly, the universe appears as countless names and forms, but its underlying reality is Brahman. The body, mind, and intellect also arise from this fundamental consciousness. Their names, forms, and functions may differ, but the Self within all beings is one and the same. Thus, the central message of Advaita Vedanta is: “Ātman is Brahman.” When we stop identifying ourselves merely with the body and mind and recognize ourselves as the Pure Witnessing Consciousness, attachment, fear, and the sense of separateness begin to disappear. We then recognize our true nature as the eternal, free, and complete Self.
